Dengue Diet: What foods to eat and avoid in dengue?

Dengue fever, caused by mosquito bites, occurs every year during the monsoon season. We all know how dangerous this disease is and how it affects the immunity of the patient. Dengue virus is mainly transmitted by female mosquitoes. What should you do if you get dengue after it is detected, apart from taking medicine?

First, follow a good diet and stay healthy. Today we share some of the most important foods to include in your diet to recover quickly from an infection. Dengue fever is a bacterial infection caused by the bite of an infected female mosquito. Dengue fever is also known as breakbone fever. There is no specific drug or vaccine against the dengue virus.

When the dengue virus enters our body, the number of blood platelets decreases rapidly. A normal blood platelet count is 150,000 to 450,000 platelets per microliter of blood. At the time of infection, the blood platelets in our body can be 5000 platelets per microliter of blood or less.

Dengue Patient Diet

1- Pomegranate juice

Pomegranate juice along with green coconut water promotes rapid recovery of hematological parameters in dengue patients. Pomegranate is rich in polyphenolic flavonoids that have antimicrobial effects. Its use relieves the feeling of fatigue. Pomegranate is especially healthy for the blood due to its high iron content. It also helps in maintaining a normal blood platelet count which is essential for dengue recovery.

2- Apple/Papaya Juice

Apple is a very nutritious fruit that undoubtedly has many health benefits. They contain a lot of fiber and antioxidants. Eating them reduces the risk of various chronic diseases. Both papaya and apple have immune-boosting properties. Apples have potential uses in the treatment of dengue. Apple juice compensates for anemia in dengue patients and also increases platelets through the antioxidants present in apples.

3- Broccoli: It is rich in vitamins and antioxidant properties which can be useful in increasing the platelet count and platelets play a very important role in getting rid of dengue.

4- Eggs, Meat: Dengue patients should eat foods that are rich in protein. A diet that is high in good-quality protein helps the body recover faster. This protein diet can include eggs, chicken, fish, and homemade dairy products such as cheese. Apart from meat, lentils can also be included in their diet. These foods provide the body with adequate amounts of nutrients that the body loses during infection.

5- Coconut water: Dengue fever usually leads to dehydration. So drinking coconut water during this fever can be extremely beneficial. Coconut water is full of electrolytes and important nutrients. Ginger water is also recommended in many cases as it helps fight nausea that many dengue patients often experience.

6- Turmeric: Turmeric acts as an antiseptic and a metabolism-boosting agent, which is why many doctors recommend consuming turmeric with milk. It helps in faster recovery. By mixing turmeric and milk and drinking it, the patient’s body starts to recover very quickly after fighting the germs and fighting the disease.

7- Vegetable soup: Carrots, cucumber, and other leafy vegetables are especially good for treating dengue symptoms. These vegetables are rich in essential vitamins and minerals that help boost immunity and ease the suffering of dengue patients.

8- Vitamin D: Vitamin D deficiency affects our immunity. Virtually none of us get enough vitamin D. Vitamin D is difficult to consume naturally because it is found mostly in fatty fish, so you can take vitamin D supplements that are found in these fatty fish.

We can also reduce dengue fever with foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Apart from this, soybeans, nuts, and seeds are some of the things that should be given in the patient’s treatment. These foods help reduce inflammation in the body and are therefore recommended as a complete diet to eat.

These things should not be eaten in Dengue

The road to recovery after a dengue attack is not easy. Although there are no specific dietary restrictions, you can make things easier by following a low-fat and spicy diet for at least a few days. Also, make it a point to eat foods that are easy to digest. If you are suffering from dengue, you should avoid some of the foods listed below.

1- Fried food

It is better to choose light food and avoid fried food. It contains a lot of fat which can lead to high blood pressure. It can slow your recovery because it weakens the immune system. Dengue fever reduces the digestive capacity making it difficult for dengue patients to digest fat. Sugary foods promote a build-up of stomach acid, which can irritate the stomach lining and increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding.

2- Spicy food

This is a big deal for all dengue recoveries. It accumulates acid in the stomach, which leads to ulcers. This hinders the healing process because your body is fighting twice as many diseases at the same time. Dengue patients can also eat boiled food with a little spice.

3- Avoid caffeine: Dengue fever requires your body to drink lots of fluids, but that doesn’t necessarily mean caffeinated drinks. These drinks cause fatigue as well as increase the heart rate and are overall not good for you especially when you are suffering from an illness.

4- Don’t eat sweets: Avoid sugar in sweets, especially processed ones, because eating such things causes inflammation in the body and can interfere with your immune system’s response, instead of reducing the fever. It tends to add up, so try to cut back on the amount of sugar in your diet.
